Chung-ryeol Lecture Hall is used to worship Jeong Mong-ju, Po-eun
who is known as the royal ancestor of the Eastern Philosophy.
This lecture hall was constructed in 1576, the 9th year of King
Seon-jo's reign, when regional members of Yu-rim including Lee
Gye and Lee Ji suggested the idea to the King. The memorial tablets
of Jeong Mong-ju and Cho Gwang-jo are enshrined here to praise
their learning, virtue and loyalty.
Thi lecture hall was first constructed in Juk-jeong-ri which is
located in the middle area between graves of Jeong Mong-ju and
cho Gwang-jo. And its original name was Juk-jeong Lecture Hall.
However, when it was damaged during the Im-jin-whae-ran (war)
the lecture hall was reconstructed near Jeong Mong-ju's grave
according to the suggestions made by Lee Jeong-gu, Jeong Jong-seon
and Lee Shi-yun in 1605, the 38th year of King Seon-jo's reign
. After the 3 years of construction, 3 shrines, 2 Eastern libraries,
and 3 gates were built.
There is hall above the gate and underneath, there is a worshipping
shrine. When the construction was over, the memorial tablet of
Cho Gwang-jo was replaced in Shim-gok Lecture Hall. this lecture
hall was given a name of Chung-ryeol and other historical figures
such as Jeong Bo, Seol-gok and Lee Shi-jik, Juk-chang were worshipped
here as well.
In 1706, the 32nd year of King Suk-jng's reign, several members
of Yu-rim including the descendants, Jeong Je-du and and Jeong
Chan-jo suggested that it should be reconstructed near the place
where it used to be. Afterwards, having played a significant role
in worshipping the ancestors and in educating reginals students,
in 1871, the 8th of King Go-jong, by the order of Dae-won-gun,
the lecture hall was closed. And in 1911 by the members of Yu-rim,
the shrine was reconstructed and in 1956, the hall was reconstructed
as well. In 1972, the entire building was rebuilt.
The building consists of 6 shrines, the inner and outer doors,
the Eastern and Western gates, and 8 halls. At the entrance of
the lecture hall, Hong-sal Door was constructed in order to keep
it divine. In the shrine, having Jeong Mong-ju in the center,
the memorial tablets of Jeong Bo and Lee Shi-jik are placed on
the left and right. The hall is used for different purposes ;
different events including meeting of Yu-rim members, and lectures.
The structure of the lecture hall is rather simple. It is built
on a slope and centering the shrine and the hall, private rooms,
Jang-gyeong-gak and Gyo-jik-sa are excluded. Especially, Chung-ryeol
Lectre Hall does not have any center axis and if you enter trough
the outer gate, you will see both the hall and the shrine. It
is once used by Lee Jae, Do-a, the great scholar of Yong-in to
exchange learning with other members of Yu-rim. However, ever
since then, it is rarely used for an educational purpose. Worships
are performed every March.
